Chinese Happy People, by Rachel Lim

The overflow of China’s domestic travellers for a ‘Hawaiian beach holiday’ experience has worn out the island of Hainan (海南).

With popularity and profits come pollution, over-crowding, and the effects of aggressive and unchecked profiteering. Its beaches are no longer pristine. Its tranquillity overrun by eager tourists and businessmen. Like the other Special Economic Zones in China, Hainan has become an unwilling witness to a strange, new beast known as Modern China.

What pulsates the psychology and social phenomena behind popular Chinese aesthetic and fashion in New China? Has mass consumption overwhelmed New China, in a psychological obsession to outdo the West?

Special thanks to Mr Jaymz Wong for his collaboration on this documentary series.
