The Story of Ones by Phạm Ngọc Lân
EDITOR’S NOTE: Young Vietnamese Photographer and Video Artist Phạm Ngọc Lân will be one of the presenters at IPA Photo Presentation HANOI during the IPA PHOTO CAMP HANOI on 16th – 19th May 2013. Lân’s short film The Story of Ones (Chuyện Mọi Nhà) is a textural portrait of Hanoi, layered with the banal soundtrack of Vietnamese state radio broadcasts. The Story of Ones is also scheduled to be screened at the Southeast Asian Film Festival 2013.
Film Synopsis
Utilizing the banality of Vietnamese state radio broadcasts, The Story of Ones gives a face and a sense of place to the unseen and offers a personal counterpoint to the officially sanctioned. Like entering a roomful of stories, the viewer steps into an unfamiliar space guided only by the sound of the radio tuning in to lifestyle programming, call-in shows and radio dramas. The portraits and settings layered atop the aural landscape create questions, provide humor, offer context and withdraw explanation of what once seemed clear before entering the room.
Bộ phim tựa như một căn phòng đầy ắp những câu chuyện được thu trực tiếp trên đài phát thanh. Tuy nội dung những câu chuyện chỉ mang tính chia sẻ cá nhân, nhưng lại được lặp đi lặp lại qua nhiều ngày, cuối cùng nghiễm nhiên trở thành ‘chuyện mọi nhà’ và được chấp nhận rộng rãi. Mặt khác, căn phòng này, cùng với chất uy-mua và những nghi vấn về các vấn đề của xã hội, đã gợi ra tình huống có khả năng đem lại cho mỗi người những băn khoăn và lời giải về nội dung và mục đích của truyền thông chính thống, cũng như những ảnh hưởng của nó lên văn hóa và đời sống của xã hội đương đại Việt Nam.
