Young Photographers and their first Projects in Vietnam at the IPA Editing Workshop

On Friday 24th January 2014, we held an IPA Editing Workshop at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi for young Vietnamese photographers working on their first or second photo projects. The workshop was mentored by Kevin WY Lee and Hai Thanh and attended by participants from cities across Northern Vietnam, including Bùi Quý Lượng, Đỗ Bá Nam, Nguyễn Thu Hương, Nguyễn Thanh Nga, Phạm Bá Lĩnh, Hoàng Tấn Ngọc, Nguyễn Thủy Tiên, Trương Tuấn Dũng, and Dương Hài Cốt.

The variety of projects were as diverse as the background of each young photographer. Hoàng Tấn Ngọc, a young wedding photographer in Da Nang presented his personal project on a family in a nearby village where there was an oddly high number of mental disability. Dương Hài Cốt, a tour guide in Nha Trang, presented a project on a community living in waste-filled village. Hài Cốt also participated in the IPA Street Photography Workshop. Nguyễn Thủy Tiên, an university student, presented a personal meditation on identity using performance art and photography. Hanoi-based freelance photographer Trương Tuấn Dũng presented his meditative series photographed at the famous Hung River in Hanoi.

Here are some highlights from the workshop.

  1. Hi there,

We are a well-established U.S.-based NGO, OneSky (formerly Half the Sky Foundation-you can look us up on our website at onesky.org for more info on the type of media format we work in), working with children in China and Vietnam. We are seeking a professional bilingual videographer to begin working with our Media Advisor in Vietnam in the next month or so.

Important criteria that are a must:
    -Bilingual in Vietnamese and English
    -Prefer a local from Vietnam
-Must provide a reel sample link and C.V.
    -Experience w/ high definition equipment
-Experience and strong desire in documentary style video material
    -Experience in commercial tv/documentary work
-Help translate while on location on behalf of our Media Advisor
    -Coordinate travel arrangements

    Work would consist of:

Working alongside Media Advisor, and acclaimed filmmaker, Richard Bowen, a highly respected member of the American Society of Cinematographers, in documentary-style filming in factory/migrant worker areas of Vietnam -DaNang and Ho Chi Minh City to name a few.

This position would entail consistent ongoing work–at least 3-10 days a month, subject to change depending on the circumstances.

Must be able to take direction via telephone for occasional solo shooting days.

A love and passion for global movement work is ideal.

Pay would be comparable depending on experience and skill set.

If interested, it would be great if you could email me at [email protected] so we can begin a dialogue.

    Thank you.

  2. The image of the portraits of people in the bathroom is not by Nguyen Thanh Nga. That series was made by Nguyen Thu Huong. Can you make that correction? I’m sure both photographers would appreciate it.

Many thanks and great job with all you do!

    Jamie
