Surface

I don’t understand the codes here. I moved to Europe in December 2009. Changing from one culture to another has produced much excitement and shock. People’s faces and their norms, and city structures are entirely different from my native country of Cambodia.

I took those pictures: perhaps I was trying to find something common and familiar to me as an Asian.

I did not feel fine when taking pictures of people I don’t know, and I don’t like taking pictures of people who are not happy to be photographed because it’s not natural any more – the moment of truth has been disturbed and changed by an outsider: me, the photographer.

So I decided to make photographs that I feel good about, and they in turn, are just the surface of being.
