余海波: The Breath Of Nights in Shenzhen, China

Haibo Yu (余海波) is one of the most prominent documentary photographers in China. Since moving to Shenzhen in 1989, Haibo has focused much of his photography on exploring the city’s many facets of urban living, economics and change.

Shenzhen is a southern coastal city filled with migrants from the neighbouring countryside. Under Deng Xiaoping, Shenzhen became the first and one of the most successful ‘Special Economic Zone’ in 1980. Most of the city’s population are young and ambitious seeking a big city, bright lights life.

In Haibo’s photographs titled ‘The Breath Of Nights’, he points his lens at the colourful night lives and euphoria of Shenzhen’s modern and progressive youth.
