28th June 2017 UPDATE:
Announcement: VSS Workshop Manila Grant awarded to photographer/writer Eloisa Lopez
After much deliberation, we have decided to award the VSS Workshop Manila Grant, kindly sponsored by Shutterspace Studios, to Eloisa Lopez (b. 1996), an independent photographer and writer based in Manila, Philippines.
Lopez’s work centers on stories of human rights, women, children, and religion.
She is a graduate of De La Salle University Manila where she took up Communication Arts. Her final thesis, a photo essay on Pope Francis’ visit in the Philippines in 2015, lead to the beginning of her career in photojournalism after local and foreign news outlets published her work online.
Lopez is a correspondent of Manila-based online news platform Rappler, and Hong Kong-based news institution Union of Catholic Asian News. Her work has also appeared on The New York Review of Books, Columbia Journalism Review, TIME (online), Der Spiegel, Quartz, and Philippine Daily Inquirer—where she was a photo correspondent for two years after college.
