A Solomons Wedding

In the Solomon Islands, when a man wants to marry a girl, he and his family has to buy the bride with shell money, necklaces made from sea shells. Every bride’s family will ask varying amounts of sea shells depending on the position of the family in the community. During the ceremony to buy the bride from the family, the groom also provides her family with gifts such as money and food. When the bride’s family consent, they also present food and household goods to the new couple. The bride will eventually be taken away the groom’s family, while the groom himself stays in the bride’s house  for a drinking party.
