Myanmar in Transition

Myanmar has been ruled by the authoritarian military junta for decades. It was a challenge visiting Nobel Prize winning activist Aung San Suu Kyi a year ago. The drivers were not willing to take me near the opposition party National League for Democracy’s headquarters. Though Suu Kyi was released from house arrest at that time, plain-clothes cops stood guard outside her home every day.

But the transition is taking shape.

Suu Kyi’s posters, stickers and flags are sold openly. Crowds of supporters gathered and shouted “Mother Suu” loudly, hoping to have a glimpse of their democracy leader. Suu Kyi, who is running on the forthcoming parliamentary by-elections, goes freely on her campaign trail. But are the Burmese enjoying the genuine democracy?

  1. Very nice set of images. I am regularly in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan across the border and it’s comforting to see that the images from Myanmar are starting to look more and more like Yunnan.
