Photobook: 50 Essays from 50 Photographers in Singapore

PLATFORM launches their +50 Photobook publication, featuring 2 books with 50 Essays from 50 Photographers in Singapore, on 25th April 2016. Introducing the project, Tay Kay Chin says “We believe that each individual voice and point of view is unique and worthy of more than a ‘like’ on Facebook. We subscribe to the common belief that in Singapore, things change rapidly, what is here today may not be here tomorrow and photography is a great way of immortalising a moment.”

Yu-mei Balasingamchow adds in an accompanying essay “In recent years, partly due to a shifting media and political landscape, partly due to the intensified national myth-making in the lead-up to Singapore’s 50th anniversary of independence, there has been greater discussion and debate over what Singapore stands for. Who or what counts as Singaporean, and looking to the future, what kind of society should it be?

The 50 photography projects in this two-volume publication offer yet more possibilities as to how these questions may be explored or inquired into. The images here range from everyday experiences such as the first day of school or the commute to work, to rarely seen specialist views of maritime shipping lanes or subterannean train tunnels, to abstract, interpretive or imaginative responses to Singapore’s changeful landscape.”

The majority of these projects were selected for publication from a series of public pitches organised by PLATFORM from June 2014 to November 2015. The invited jurors comprised photographers, artists, curators, designers and writers. Apart from the pitches, a few photographers were invited by PLATFORM.

The retail price is $25 per book OR $40 for a set.
