One of the simplest, and yet most beautiful things about photography is that ownership is democratic and everyone can choose and define their own relationships with Photography.
I popped by the opening of a little exhibition called Insight today. The exhibited photographs were taken by a handful of visually-impaired tour guides of ‘Dialogue In The Dark‘ in Singapore, during a photography workshop by Bob Lee. It’s fair to say they, as photographers, were completely void of any sense of sight. Bob worked with them over 5 weeks teaching them basic techniques and using photography as therapy. Each of them was asked what they wanted to photograph and Bob facilitated the process.
Serene Hong wanted to take pictures of her family holiday in Hong Kong and Macau. Jason Setok took pictures of Singapore landmarks while cruising the Singapore river. Elaine Wong chose to shoot up-close the braille-aided utilities she feels everyday. William Hiu photographed his daily route home and the personal landmarks along the way that provide him safe directions.
The photography was simple, honest and rich in personal content. It was a humbling, enlightening experience. As I left, I pondered my own current ‘Dialogue in the Light’ and what might become of it if suddenly the lights were switched off.
The exhibition is currently on at the Crazy World Cafe, 24 Temple Street, Singapore 058569.
