Paul Yeung Tak Ming: A Fragrant Fascination
with Fairs in Hong Kong
Hong Kong photographer and former chairman of the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association, Paul Yeung won 2nd Place in the IPA Street Photography Asia Award 2013. His winning photographs taken at a beauty cosmetics fair makes a sharp, whimsical remark on Hong Kong’s strong consumerist culture.
A few words from Paul on his photography and winning our Award this year:
“I’m excited to receive the IPA Street Photography Asia Award and it’s really my pleasure to share my point of view with you through the photos.
My camera captures ordinary people, witnessing our own behaviour through the eyes of a stranger – what causes every move we make? How do our thoughts, cultures and habits become a mainstream? Like father, like son – a certain kind of society breeds the same certain kind of people; similarly, a certain kind of people breeds the same certain kind of society. In simple terms, the anxiety evoked from bandwagon effect, unconscious consumerism and short-sighted utilitarianism have conquered the mainstream in Hong Kong.”
“Having worked as a photojournalist, I always have a passion for expanding the world of photo documentary. This awards has encouraged me indeed and hope I can keep the passion as a photographer to see the world with my fresh eyes.
Finally, I would like to thank a lot to Invisible Photographer Asia for encouraging and supporting photographers in Asia.”
