We have always been fans of Ricoh cameras. They make great compact cameras. We have used Ricoh GXR, GR1s and the GRD3 cameras, so were quite curious about the new Ricoh GRD4. Fortunately, we managed to get our hands on a loan unit for a few days. While this is not a full review, here are some points we noted about the GRD4.
The GRD4 body looks and feels exactly the same as the 3. Once powered, the most immediate difference in the GRD4 over the 3 is the auto-focus speed – it is noticeably faster, even in low light environments. Looking at the pictures taken, the GRD4 ISO performance appears to be a stop better than the 3. The GRD4 has a new image engine. There are some new modes on the GRD4 that we like – the Multiple Exposure Mode (up to 5 overlapping shots) and new ‘Positive Film’ and ‘Bleach Bypass’ Color Modes.
We were curious how Aik Beng Chia, a mobile photographer who shoots exclusively with an iPhone, would take to the GRD4 so we let him have a go. His thoughts after trialing the GRD4: “The Pocket-able size is winner; I personally like the grip of the camera; Auto focusing is very fast (but I don’t know the speed of the GRD3’s auto focusing); I like the new Bleach Bypass & Positive Film modes in terms of how the colors tones turn out; the GRD4 is good for street photography (in my opinion); I like how the GRD4 handles at night with the right ISO setup – highest I tried was ISO 800 in manual mode. I would like to own one in future. :P”
