Contact Sheets – Magnum Contact Sheets

Derrick Choo 21/08/2012 PROJECTS 24 Comments

Looking at a contact sheet is, I find, like reconstructing your own human path. It’s a beautiful moment. It’s perhaps even more beautiful – more enjoyable – than taking the picture.

Saul Leiter – Early Color

Derrick Choo 12/07/2012 Craft & Tools, Reviews, Street Photography 8 Comments

Saul Leiter: Early Color features 100 colour photographs that Leiter took mostly in the 1950s. I cannot think of many street photographers from the 1950s to 1970s who worked well in colour.

Photo books: Women Photographers

After I did the write up on the Vivian Maier: Street Photographer book, I was thinking about why there were relatively few well-known women photographers compared to men photographers.

Walkabout with the Olympus OM-D EM-5

Derrick Choo 04/05/2012 Craft & Tools, Reviews 11 Comments

My main intention for borrowing the OM-D was simply to have some fun with it and see how it handled as a walkabout camera. I have a few impressions of the camera but these have to be taken with a pinch of salt because I only used the camera for a short time.

Vivian Maier – Street Photographer

Derrick Choo 29/04/2012 Reviews, Street Photography 12 Comments

Vivian Maier worked as a professional nanny all her working life. After picking up photography sometime in the late 1940s, she started photographing the world around her during her leisure time. In her lifetime, she amassed a body of work comprising of over 100,000 negatives as well as hundreds of rolls of undeveloped film.

In the 10 plus years that I have been involved in photography, I have read and owned only 1 book that contained the technical bit of photography (e.g. Exposure, ISO, Lenses, etc).

Street Photography in Japan with the Fuji X10 – Part 1

Derrick Choo 24/01/2012 Craft & Tools, Reviews, Street Photography 14 Comments

I like traveling and one of the things I enjoy doing when I travel is to wander around (sometimes aimlessly) and shoot whatever catches my eyes. During my visit to Japan about 2 months ago, I used the Fuji X10 as my walkabout camera.

Omni Polis by Shogo Yamada & Manila by Jun Abe

Derrick Choo 09/01/2012 Craft & Tools, Reviews, Street Photography 7 Comments

“Omni Polis” by Shogo Yamada and “Manila” by Jun Abe are the latest offerings by Osaka-based publishing company Vacuum Press. From what I gather, Vacuum Press is owned and run by a collective of 4 photographers (Shunji Dodo, Jun Abe, Shogo Yamada, and Yasuko Noguchi) who set up the company to publish their own work.
